Summary of the Movie: Lincoln Lawyer

In his Lincoln Continental sedan, Mick Haller (Matthew McConaughey) is a charismatic defense lawyer. In his time defending petty crooks and other bottom feeders, it is quite a surprise when he lands the case of a lifetime: defending a Beverly Hills playboy (Ryan Phillippe) accused of attempted murder. It turns out, however, that what Mick originally thought was an open-and-shut case with a large monetary reward was actually more sinister than he thought.

Plot of the Movie

As a criminal defense attorney, Mickey Haller works in LA County, California, from a black Lincoln Town Car chauffeured by Earl Briggs. Eddie Vogel, the leader of a biker gang, is among his clients. His ex-wife, Maggie McPherson, is a district attorney who disapproves of his choice of clients.

Haller is unexpectedly sought out by Louis Roulet, the son of real estate mogul Mary Windsor, for representation in a brutal beating case involving a prostitute. Together with his investigator Frank Levin, Haller looks through photos and evidence to discover similarities to an earlier incident where a prostitute was murdered. Haller had represented Jesus Martinez in that case, believing him to be innocent but convincing him to plead guilty as not to incur the death penalty.

As Haller shows Martinez Roulet’s photo, Martinez becomes agitated. Haller is convinced that Roulet is likely the killer and that Roulet chose him as counsel in order to bind him to attorney-client confidentiality rules and prevent him from discussing either case. With his own hands tied, Haller instructs Levin to investigate Roulet.

After breaking into Haller’s house, Roulet casually admits to the murder, for which Martinez was convicted, and makes veiled threats towards his daughter. Haller finds Levin shot dead after he left him a voicemail saying he found Martinez’s “ticket out of jail.” The bullet that killed Levin matches his late father’s antique Colt Woodsman, which is missing from its box.

As a legal obligation, Haller ruthlessly cross-examines Campo, discrediting her in the process. He also secretly sets up a jail informant, Dwayne Jeffrey Corliss, to testify against Roulet with information about the previous murder. As a result of Haller’s ability to discredit DJ’s testimony, Roulet’s current charges are dismissed. However, following Roulet’s release, the police arrest him immediately for the previous murder based on DJ’s description.

As a form of protection, Haller obtains a pistol from Earl. Roulet’s family releases him due to a lack of evidence. At Maggie’s house, Haller confronts him. Roulet mockingly tells Haller he cannot guard his family all the time; Haller vows he will not stop until Martinez is freed and Roulet is convicted for his crime. A biker gang suddenly arrives and brutally beats Roulet.

Maggie discovers Levin had found a parking ticket issued to Roulet near the murder victim’s house, strong evidence against him. Haller finds Roulet’s mother, Mary Windsor, waiting for him when he arrives home, a Colt Woodsman in her hand. She confesses to killing Levin. Haller fatally shoots Mary when she tries to shoot him again with Earl’s pistol. As Haller and Earl drive away, Vogel and the biker gang pull him over, whose case he takes pro bono in gratitude for their help.

Summary of the Series: Lincoln Lawyer

Haller inherits Hollywood lawyer Jerry Vincent’s practice after his death, including his defense of Trevor Elliott, a tech billionaire accused of murdering his wife and her lover. However, Haller finds out that Vincent’s killer might come for him next as he prepares for the case that could launch him to fame.

Development of the Series

In 2018, David E. Kelley wrote a spec script for a television series that was to be produced by A+E Studios at Epix but unfortunately the project did not move forward. He then decided to work on a different project with A+E and adapted The Lincoln Lawyer after revealing his excitement for legal dramas.

By June 2019, CBS had given the project a series production commitment. In February 2020, Ted Humphrey began supervising the show’s production while Kiele Sanchez joined the cast as Lorna. On top of this, Angus Sampson and Jazz Raycole also joined earlier in May as Cisco and Izzy respectively. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, it was reported in May 2020 that CBS will no longer be going ahead with the series.

When Netflix picked up the series with a 10-episode order in January 2021, Kelly Kahl, President of CBS Entertainment called the decision a “tough call”, as two scripts had already been written and two others were being developed, while Logan Marshall-Green was negotiating to star as Mickey Haller. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo was announced as Haller’s replacement later that month and Neve Campbell and Becki Newton signed on in February, with Raycole and Sampson reprising their roles from the movie.

Christopher Gorham was added in March, followed by Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine who was cast for an exclusive role and LisaGay Hamilton, Jamie McShane, and Reggie Lee joined the show in recurring capacities. Krista Warner was the final addition to the cast in May. Netflix renewed the series for a second season on June 14, 2022.

Filming of the Series

Principal photography for The Lincoln Lawyer, which eventually began filming on March 30, 2021, had been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic for around a year. Michael Connelly revealed the news on social media that same day. As of June 8, 2021, Connelly stated in an interview that six out of ten episodes had been captured and three of those were edited in completion. He also discounted any possibility of seeing characters from Amazon Prime Video’s Bosch making appearances as both shows are from different networks.[26] Notably, filming sites included Admiralty Way in Marina del Rey, Spring Street in Downtown Los Angeles, Grand Avenue, the Wilshire Ebell Theatre and Wilshire Boulevard; shooting concluded on August 3rd.

During season 2, filming took place at the Paseo Club in Valencia, The Cowboy Palace Saloon in Chatsworth, Sixth Street Bridge, and the Los Angeles Equestrian Center.

Lawsuit relating the Series

In August 2021, Frankl & Bob Films II, LLC, a subsidiary of A+E Studios, filed a lawsuit against ViacomCBS for “millions of dollars” in damages after the company decided not to proceed with the series the previous year. Having been created on December 4, 2019, court documents stated that upon its merger with ViacomCBS and under the leadership of George Cheeks, their new management team second-guessed CBS Network’s original agreement for a 13-episode series.

Finding it not desirable to continue forward with the project, Cheeks and his ViacomCBS colleagues determined it was better for them to breach the commitment. The documents further claim that because the first episode hadn’t been filmed and their decision ensured “that the series would never make it onto broadcast television”.
